Adventures in Respiration: Modes of Asphyxiation and Methods of Resuscitation
The book mainly deals with modes of asphyxiation and methods of resuscitation. In the earlier chapters the author has discussed the role of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the physiology of the human system and the modern principles of shock and acapnia. The discussions on the fallacy of asphyxial acidosis and on the phenomenon of acarbia deserve special mention. The book was read all through with...
متن کاملSuicidal asphyxiation by inhalation of automobile emission without carbon monoxide poisoning.
Reported herein is the suicidal asphyxiation of a young man due to exhaustion of oxygen in the interior of a sealed automobile into which the exhaust emissions were diverted. His blood carboxyhemaglobin concentration was less than 5% saturation. The car was equipped with a catalytic converter and when tested, the exhaust carbon monoxide concentration was 0.01%.
متن کاملCarbon Monoxide Improves Neurologic Outcomes by Mitochondrial Biogenesis after Global Cerebral Ischemia Induced by Cardiac Arrest in Rats
Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to brain injury following global cerebral ischemia after cardiac arrest. Carbon monoxide treatment has shown potent cytoprotective effects in ischemia/reperfusion injury. This study aimed to investigate the effects of carbon monoxide-releasing molecules on brain mitochondrial dysfunction and brain injury following resuscitation after cardiac arrest in rats....
متن کاملThe clinical toxicology of carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a dangerous exogenous poison and an essential endogenous neurotransmitter. This gas when inhaled has an anaesthetic effect, which is poorly understood, but which may be fatal if compensatory mechanisms are exhausted, if cardiac oxygen (O(2)) needs exceed myocardial oxygenation and/or if apnoea or asphyxia onsets. Although there is considerable evidence that hypoxia occur...
